1919

Edgar Allen founds the National Society for Crippled Children, inspired by the tragic loss of his son.

1926

The Iowa Society for Crippled Children is born. The first annual meeting marks the official start of Easterseals Iowa.

1934

The first Easter “seal” fundraising campaign launches — 86 million seals sold in 8 states.

1958

Clarence and Thyra Yarn, living south of Ankeny, generously donate 80 acres of woodland to become the future home of Camp Sunnyside.

1959- 1961

Camp Sunnyside becomes a reality after years of community-driven fundraising. The first full season of camp begins in 1962.

1968

The Pony Express Ride launches in Northwest Iowa, a tradition that has raised more than $12 million for Easterseals Iowa by 2025.

1974

Regional offices are created to expand services across the state, ensuring local access to care and resources.

1986

Easterseals Iowa launches the FaRM program to support rural families — now known as Rural Solutions.

1995

The Career Center opens, helping individuals with disabilities gain meaningful employment.

2002

The Child Development Center opens, offering inclusive care for children of all abilities.

2013

Camp Sunnyside is chosen for a Hubbell Realty Extreme Build – providing two brand new lodges to replace the original cabins.

2017

McAninch Family Aquatic Center opens for camp use.

2018

Built to Last Capital Campaign provided for several remodeled and updated buildings, including the Doug and Donna McAninch Independence Innovation Center.

2019

Easterseals Iowa introduces a new logo and branding to reflect a bright, inclusive future.

Despite the COVID-19 pandemic, many services were able to be continued safely, ensuring that clients and families had the support they needed during this challenging time.

2021

New Brain Health program launched, filling a need in the community for additional mental health supports.

Hubbell Realty Company once again brought another Extreme Build, providing a new Child Development Center and doubling capacity for the program.
